Have you ever been stuck in the middle on the interstate? I don't just mean like oh we were in slow traffic and it was backed up but we edged along. I mean like sitting not moving, turn your car off, people getting out of the cars and walking around type of not moving. Ive seen picture of it happen to people before and always think I wonder what it would be like to have that happen. Not that I ever would want it to happen it just seemed like something that after it happened you could tell the story and be like hey that happened to me.
Well...it happened to me.
Flash back to last Friday: lets get a clear picture here. It was July 3rd, good bit a traffic but not too bad, 20-30 mins outside of my home town and only an hour to go to get the river, we were sailing along and then a fire truck went by...then an ambulance...and then a cop...and then traffic completely stopped, and for the next hour we sat there...unmoving.
In the hour multiple more firetrucks and ambulances and cops drove by with there lights on, lets say one every five minutes or so and the longer we sat there the weirder things got.
First people started getting out of their cars to see what was going on, pretty self explanatory I supposed, then people started sitting on the sides of the interstate eating snacks: peaches, nectarines, and one lady had a whole bucket of watermelon. Before long a guy started skateboarding up an down the interstate. Now keep in mind this isn't some dinky highway, this is interstate 64 we are talking about. Soon you could see an ongoing soccer game about a quarter of a mile up the road and people were going into the wood and wondering around.
Its kinda hard to tell from the picture but there are people walking around and standing between all the cars. And yes that picture was taken of me standing right in the middle of the interstate. Of all the places in the world that I have wanted to take pictures standing in the middle of I-64 was not really one of the places that I pictured myself standing. But hey, now I can tell people that I have stood on one the busiest interstates in my area.
I don't actually know how long the backup lasted cause we ended up turning around and going through a cut through going back toward town and taking a different road. I heard that the re opened the interstate right after we turned around and left though which is kinda funny. It probably still took awhile though cause even after the cars started moving all those people who were skateboarding had to run back to their cars!!
XOXO
